Spring Assisted Knives At Shot Show

Print

Shot show is just barely over 3 days away, and we could not be more excited!   For those of you who don’t know what shot show is, allow me to enlighten you.  Shot show is a convention held every year, where knife makers (among others) come to showcase the new and exciting stuff they will be releasing.  It’s an opportunity for all of us to get a first look at the stuff we have been hearing rumors about!

For those of you who love all things spring assisted, this is an opportunity to see the stuff we are all looking forward to.  We know for sure Benchmade will be there (Located at booth 10357, for those of you going) but what we don’t know is what they will be showcasing.  They have kept a pretty tight lid on things so far, so come Tuesday we may be in for some surprises.

At this point, we are hoping they bring the Barrage Axis-assist knife.  Pre-orders are currently open for this eagerly anticipated new spring assisted, and while it still has the proven design of the barrage, this model looks to only improve upon it.   We are hoping the Benchmade booth has one of these sweet knives we can get a closer look at!

We also know that Kershaw will be there but, like Benchmade, they are being relatively secretive with what they are offering.  Last year they brought 3 different, new autos, so we are keeping our fingers crossed that this year they bring something spring assisted.  We are still kind of in love with the Cryo, so we are holding out for something similar.  It may be a long shot, but hey, it’s Shot Show, so who knows what could happen!

These are just 2 of the knife retailers who are going to be present at this year’s Shot show,  but make no mistake, there will be plenty, including Boker, Buck, Gerber, Spyderco and Microtech just to name a few!

Check back next week as we will be bringing you as much info as we can, live from the show!   What are you hoping pops up at Shot Show this year?  Let us know in the comments below!   Are you lucky enough to be going to Shot Show?  Share pictures and news with us as well!

Cold Steel Swift II Spring Assisted

Cold Steel is a name synonymous with fantastic knives.  However, they have not dabbled too much when it comes to spring assisted.  When a company as impressive as Cold Steel starts making a new type of knife, you should take notice.  It can always go one of 2 ways.  It can either shatter expectations or fall short.

cold-steel-22ab-cm-large

The Cold Steel Swift II spring assisted is a fantastic upgrade from their first attempt at a spring assisted.  Cold Steel knew what spring assisted fans wanted and they provided.  Featuring all the top-notch materials you have come to expect from Cold Steel.  The blade itself is made from CTS-XHP steel.  A reliable, lightweight steel.  The light metal pairs perfectly with the Flash-Tek spring assisted system.  This knife is as fast as a flash when opening, something any good spring assisted should be able to do!  It also has a very reliable lock back addition.  Guaranteeing that when you open this knife, it stays in place.  No slipping or popping out while using.  Cold steel has gone to great lengths to ensure that their first foray into the world of spring assisted knives was as successful one.

cold-steel-22ab-side-cm-large

The handle is designed with a very ergonomic G-10 handle scale system, including 3D CNC machining for even better comfort, and a more improved grip.  When you pick up this knife, it settles comfortably in your grip.  You can feel the extra work that went into making this knife.

But enough with the specs.  You can sit here, and listen to facts.  But what you want to know is “How does it feel”?   If you are a tried and true knife fan, you can tell the quality of a knife just by picking it up.  It starts to become a sort of 6th sense.  By grabbing a knife, you can just tell.  This knife is a knife that you will pick up and immediately get a sense of the quality of the materials, and the attention to detail.  You can see just how much work Cold Steel took to make sure this knife lived up to every expectation.

cold-steel-22ab-bottom-cm-large

It can always be a gamble, buying a new design from a company.  Sometimes you really don’t know what you are in for.  Well, I can guarantee you that Cold Steel’s first attempt at a Spring Assisted, the Swift I is a successful one, and this design only improves!   After holding, and using this knife, I can only hope that this is not Cold Steels last attempt at a Spring Assisted.  I am very excited to see what they come up with next.

Have you had a chance to experiment with this one of a kind knife?  What do you think?  Do you think Cold Steel is on to something?  Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Knife Laws: Travel

Tomorrow marks a very important day of remembrance in the United States.  We should all be talking a moment to remember and honor the lives lost on 9/11.

TSA

Each time this date rolls around, it really gets me thinking.  The events of 9/11 severely impacted flight travel all over the world.  Immediately the TSA outlawed a number of items from flying in a commercial aircraft.  But slowly, as time moves along they are beginning to allow more and more things.

Seeing as how you are on a blog dedicated to spring assisted knives, you have no doubt wondered whether or not your knife can come with you.  It is a common habit for me to just grab my knife on the way out the door, same as I would with my wallet or cell phone.  I don’t think anything about it.  One specific instance, I grabbed my knife and headed to the airport for a trip.  I didn’t think anything of it at the time, but when I arrived at the airport I realized my mistake.  I was stopped by the TSA guards, and informed I could not be taking my knife with me.  I could either keep my knife or take it back to my car (toeing the risk of missing my flight), or I could let them keep the knife.  Luckily, I had some family there seeing me off, so they were able to take the knife with them.  Thank goodness.  I wasn’t about to miss my flight, but I didn’t want to see my beloved knife taken from me.

I am sure I am not the first person to experience something similar to this.  The TSA has reported confiscating tens of thousands of knives each year, going to show countless people are going through what I went through, but not all of them are able to keep their knives.  It’s a terrible situation to be part of, but understandable.  Well, luckily for us, things are beginning to change.

Fairly recently the TSA has begun to change their rules regarding knives on planes.  As of writing this, a traveler is allowed to have one knife on their person.  The knife itself MUST BE less than 2.36” long and ½” wide.  There is no wiggle room on this, and this only goes for folding knives.  Don’t plan on taking any type of fixed blade with you.  But as for now, you can take that small, beloved folding knife.  However, in all honesty, you are probably better off just leaving that knife at home, just to avoid any issues.  Rules and regulations are always subject to change, so be sure to check before leaving for that trip of yours.  But things are beginning to look up for us spring assisted knife guys out there.

Have any info you would like to offer?  Lost a knife to the TSA?  Let us know in the comments below.

FrogLube!

FrogLube-Oval-Lrg

When it comes to taking care of your spring assisted knives, you want make sure you are using the best quality stuff.  Off brand, or cheaply made stuff can damage you knife.  And in the case of spring assisted, it can jam up the spring, or cause it to underperform.  It can be a little nerve wracking to purchase a lubricant for you knife without doing any research first.  You may not know what it might do to your knife.  Once it’s inside, it can be incredibly difficult to get it out, should it cause any problems.

So if you are in the market for a new cleaning system, but you’re not sure where to start, hopefully we can help get you started.  Recently I tested FrogLube.  I know, it sounds ridiculous.  But I was pleasantly surprised.  I love my spring assisted knives, and I am always so hesitant to clean them, in fear of causing permanent damage.  So I was rather hesitant in using FrogLube.  But, luckily, that hesitation was un-warranted.  I think I may have found my permanent cleaning solution.

FrogLube is the first “green” lubrication system of its kind.  9 times out of 10, it will out-perform its traditional petroleum-based competitors.  This product was extensively tested on all manner of fire arms and knives.  And, to top it off, the item is non-toxic, so you don’t need to worry about using it on your knife, then using your knife on something you will be consuming.  It is entirely safe to handle.

At the start, I was hesitant to spend a lot of money on something I was not sure would work.  I don’t want to invest upwards of $30 in something when I am not sure if I will live up to my expectations.  So I started with the Frog Lube 5ml Squeeze individual packet.  For only $0.99, I was willing to give it a shot.

frog-lube-fl-5ml-squeeze-large

I decided to use it on my BlackFox Tactical 113T Tanto Spring Assisted Knife.  A fairly inexpensive knife.  I would still be upset if it was damaged, but it is easy to replace.  Luckily for me, I didn’t need to!  The FrogLube performed beyond my expectations.  Often times, after a while, the lubricant can become tacky, and gum up the spring or swivel point.  This didn’t happen with FrogLube.  It provided exactly what I needed.  A lubricant that keeps the swivel point performing at peak functionality.

frog-lube-complete-weapon-care-system-pack-large

After testing out the cheapest option, and seeing how well it performed, I decided to “spring” for something more long term.  I happily purchased the Frog Lube CLP 4 oz. Premium Cleaner Kit.  Coming with added cleaning brush and syringe applicator, I will be using this on all my spring assisted knives in the future.

FrogLube offers a myriad of different products, from one shot touch ups, to full on premium cleaning kits.  If you are in the market for an outstanding way to care for and maintain your spring assisted knives, I highly suggest you give FrogLube a shot.

Have you tried FrogLube before?  What do you think?  Have any added questions?  Let us know in the comments below.

Kershaw Amplitude 3.25

Here at BladeHQ we recently got in a shipment of some pretty sleek spring assisted knives, and I just couldn’t wait to tell all of you about it.

kershaw-amplitude-3-25-3871bw-cm-2-large

Kershaw is a name that is synonymous with quality, design and durability, and this knife is no different.  The Kershaw Amplitude 3.25 Spring Assisted caught my eye immediately.  Its spear point blade and stainless steel handle both have a blackwash finish, giving a uniformity to the overall knife.

Originally designed by Todd Rexford, the 3.25 is a larger of version of the 2.5 that was introduced in 2014.  This knife is definitely a step up.  Often times you will see knife brands attempt to improve on older designs, only to remove everything you loved about the original.  This is not so with the Kershaw Amplitude 3.25 Kershaw has taken everything you loved about the 2.5 and just made it bigger.  Perfect for those with larger hands, or if you just want a little more control while using the knife.

kershaw-amplitude-3-25-3871bw-side-cm-large

As I mentioned above, the Kershaw Amplitude 3.25 is a Todd Rexford design.  Todd gave this knife a very sleek, polished design.  Making it absolutely perfect for every day carry action.  Grab this knife on your way out in the morning and you will have a trusty tool all day long.

Now, I know what you are thinking.  “If they made it bigger, will it be bulkier”?  I can answer that question with a firm “No”.  While yes, the knife has been increased slightly in size, it in no way feels “bulkier”.  If anything, it feels sturdier and more reliable to carry.  Making it a perfect companion for all your outdoor adventures this summer.

kershaw-amplitude-3-25-3871bw-bottom-cm-large

One thing I have always appreciated when it comes to Kershaw is their commitment to making excellent knives, at an affordable price.  They could easily charge an arm and a leg for their quality knives, but instead they are able to offer them at affordable prices without compromising quality.  Bringing impressive knives to knife lovers of all walks of life.  The Kershaw Amplitude 3.25 boasts a modest price tag of $30.95.  You can easily get this fantastic EDC without stretching the budget.  So if you are looking for a new, durable, reliable EDC at an affordable price without compromising quality, I strongly suggest the Kershaw Amplitude 3.25.

As always, we enjoy hearing from you!  Do you plan on getting this great knife?  Or maybe you already have it?  Let us know in the comments below.

Hey there spring assisted fans.  In case you haven’t been keeping updated (come on though, who hasn’t), the 2015 blade show was last weekend in Atlanta.  It was awesome, so many cool knives in one spot.  At the end of the show, they do an awards ceremony, including categories like Overall Knife of the Year, and Imported Knife of the Year, things like that.  Well this year was good news for those of you who love all things spring assisted.

The Pro-Tech Warenski Ultimate Godfather took home the award for “Investor/Collector Knife of the Year”.  This is great news for anyone collecting spring assisted knives.  The Pro-Tech Warenski Ultimate Godfather is a quality OTF, and it absolutely deserves the award.  This knife has a place in the pocket of any collector.

This knife is still in development, so you can’t get your hands on it just yet, but we can’t wait till we can.  However, we can keep our selves busy with the regular Protech godfather, still a quality knife worth owning.  It will help tide us over until we can get our hands on that Ultimate Godfather.

So what do you think?  Do you agree with this year’s award winner?  Would you have chosen someone else?  Do you plan on getting the Protech Ultimate Godfather?  Let us know in the comments.

Every so often you come across a knife brand that makes you stop and take notice.  Whether it’s their unique designs, quality made knife, or just something that makes it stand out.  In this case, that would be Master Cutlery Knives.  If you decide to browse their great selection of spring assisted knives, you are going to notice they have some very unique, fun knives, worth a second glance.

Not only are the knives they offer fun to look at, they happen to hold their own as far as knives go.  Too often you find a knife with an interesting design, only to find that it is sub-par when it comes to actually doing the things a spring assisted knife should do, sometimes the knife is not made of great material, or the spring just doesn’t react like it should.  This is not the case with the knives offered by Master Cutlery.  While the designs are interesting and unique, they function perfectly as a spring assisted.  So not only do you have a knife that doubles as a conversation piece, you also have a knife that will work great, and stand up to quite a bit of punishment.
